The Small Business SEO Checklist (10 Things to Fix Today)

Zarvigo Team · 7 min read · SEO

SEO sounds technical, but for a small local business, the vast majority of it comes down to ten concrete, non-technical fixes. None of these require a developer or a monthly retainer — most can be done in an afternoon. Here's the checklist, in the order we'd tackle it.

1. Fix your title tags

The title tag is the blue clickable headline in Google search results, and it's one of the strongest ranking signals you control directly. "Home" or "Welcome to Our Website" tells Google nothing. Instead, use the format: What You Do + Where You Do It — e.g. "Custom Cake Bakery in Pune | [Business Name]." Every page needs its own unique title, under 60 characters.

2. Write real meta descriptions

The meta description is the grey summary text under your title in search results. It doesn't directly boost ranking, but it's your pitch to get the click. Write one to two sentences that state what you offer and why to choose you, under 155 characters, for every page — don't leave it blank and let Google guess.

3. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

For local searches ("near me," city names), your Google Business Profile often matters more than your website itself. Claim it at google.com/business, fill in every field — category, hours, phone, service area, photos — and keep it updated. An incomplete or unclaimed profile is one of the single biggest missed opportunities for local businesses.

4. Make sure your site is actually mobile-friendly

Google has used mobile-first indexing for years, meaning it primarily evaluates the mobile version of your site to decide how to rank you — even for desktop searches. Test your site with Google's Mobile-Friendly Test tool. If it fails, this should jump to the top of your list.

5. Improve page speed

Site speed is a confirmed ranking factor, and it directly affects how long visitors stay. Compress images, remove unused scripts and fonts, and avoid heavy sliders or video backgrounds on your homepage. Aim for a load time under 2–3 seconds.

6. Target local, specific keywords — not generic ones

"Web design" is nearly impossible for a small business to rank for. "Affordable web design for salons in Kolkata" is realistic and matches how real people actually search when they're close to buying. Write page copy and headings around the specific service plus specific location or niche, not broad generic terms.

7. Add alt text to every image

Alt text is the written description behind an image, read by screen readers and by Google's crawlers (which can't "see" images the way humans do). Every meaningful image should have a short, accurate description — e.g. "custom three-tier wedding cake with fresh flowers" instead of "IMG_4521.jpg" or nothing at all.

8. Link your own pages to each other

Internal linking — your homepage linking to your services page, your services page linking to a relevant blog post — helps Google understand your site's structure and helps visitors find more of what you offer. Most small business sites have zero internal links beyond the main navigation. Add a few contextual links inside your page content.

9. Make sure your site runs on HTTPS

If your address bar shows "Not Secure" instead of a padlock, that's a trust and ranking problem. HTTPS (via an SSL certificate) is a baseline ranking factor and most hosting providers now include it free. If your site doesn't have it, this is a same-day fix through your host.

10. Keep your NAP consistent everywhere

NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone number. Google cross-checks this information across your website, Google Business Profile, and other directories (Justdial, Facebook, industry listings). If your phone number or address is written differently in each place, it weakens local trust signals. Pick one exact format and use it identically everywhere.

Where to start if you only do three: claim your Google Business Profile, fix your title tags, and confirm your site passes the mobile-friendly test. Those three alone move the needle more than almost anything else on this list.

SEO is maintenance, not a one-time task

None of this is a "set it and forget it" job — search rankings shift as competitors update their own sites and as Google refines its algorithm. But getting these ten fundamentals right puts you ahead of the majority of small business websites, which skip most of this checklist entirely.
